Sobre Il Sartoriale

Uma publicação de referência sobre as melhores roupas que os homens vestem, as pessoas que as fazem e os materiais e métodos com que são feitas.

O que é isto

Good information about fine clothing is scattered, partial and often written to sell something. A house's own site tells you its founding year and little else. Forum threads hold real expertise buried under a decade of argument. Magazine profiles are frequently commissioned by the subject. The most useful writing in the field, a handful of independent blogs and a few books, covers a fraction of the makers working today and almost none of the mills.

Il Sartoriale exists to organise what is actually known. Every tailoring house, shoemaker, shirtmaker and mill is a structured record: where it is, what it makes, how it constructs a garment, what it charges when that has been published, and who it is connected to. Every material, technique and garment type has a page written at three depths, so the same page serves a reader who has never heard the word canvas and a reader who wants the fibre diameter.

The connections between those records are the point. A cloth leads to the mill that weaves it, the houses that cut it, the garments it suits and the climate it was designed for. That web is the thing no single article can give you, and it is why this is a database with a magazine on top rather than a magazine with a database bolted on.

O que isto não é

It is not a shop. Nothing here is for sale, no maker pays to appear, and no assessment is available for purchase. It is not a news site: trade reporting is collected and linked, but evergreen reference is the asset. And it is not an aggregator of other people's articles: where a page draws on published work it says so, links to it, and does not reproduce it.

Como os registos são construídos

A record starts from primary material where it exists (a house's own published statements, company registries, museum and archive collections, trade bodies) and is filled out from books and reporting by named publications. Every page lists what it drew on. Fields we cannot substantiate are left empty with a note saying so, which is why you will see a great many dashes on this site. A dash is a deliberate statement: we could not verify it, so we did not write it.

Prices are treated as the most perishable facts on the site and handled accordingly. Each one carries its currency, its observation date, and whether it came from the house or from a publication. After twelve months a price is marked as old wherever it appears. We would rather show you a dated figure honestly labelled than a fresh-looking one we have not re-checked.

Fotografia

Every photograph on this site carries its creator, its source and its licence, immediately beneath it. Images come from Wikimedia Commons, museum open-access collections and other sources whose licences permit this use. Where no properly licensed photograph of a subject exists, the page carries no photograph, not a substitute, and never a generated one. There are no synthetic images of real craftsmen or workshops here. Full detail is in the image licensing policy.

Independência

No maker, brand or mill has any influence over what appears on this site or how it is described. If commercial links are ever introduced they will be labelled at the point of use and will not affect coverage or assessment; the standing policy is in the affiliate disclosure. Where the site expresses an opinion, and it does, in comparisons and assessments, it is separated from the record and follows a published method.

Correcções

This site will contain errors. Some will be ours; some will be inherited from sources that were wrong. If you know one, particularly if you are the house being described, please tell us. Corrections to matters of fact are made promptly and the page's review date is updated.

Línguas

The interface is available in sixteen languages. The reference content is written in English; interface translation is machine-generated and reviewed only in part, so where a translated label reads oddly, the English is authoritative. Legal pages remain in English deliberately.
