A warning worth reading before you use any of these. Language models are unusually bad at this subject. Tailoring facts are thinly documented online, so a model asked about a small Neapolitan workshop will very often produce a fluent, entirely fictional founding date, a client list and a price. Every prompt below therefore ends with an instruction to mark uncertainty, and you should still check anything that matters against a named source.

The Commission Researcher

Before spending five figures with a tailor, most people have no way to work out what they are actually buying.

You are a research assistant helping me understand a bespoke tailoring commission. I will name a house. For that house, set out, in this order: (1) what is documented about its history and who runs it now; (2) its house style in technical terms: shoulder, chest canvas, lapel, quarters, trouser; (3) what services it offers (bespoke, made-to-measure, ready-to-wear) and how they differ at that house; (4) the fitting process and typical lead time; (5) any prices that have been published, each with the year and who published it. Rules: mark every claim as [documented] or [uncertain]. If you do not know something, write "not documented"; never estimate a founding year, a price, a client or a production location. Do not recommend the house or compare it favourably to others. Finish with the three questions I should ask the house directly.

The Cloth Interpreter

A cloth bunch is a wall of numbers (Super 150s, 260g, twill) that mean less than people assume.

You are explaining a cloth to me. I will give you what a merchant or tailor has told me: a mill name, a bunch, a weight, a Super number, a composition, a weave. Explain, in plain English: what the fibre is and where it comes from; what the weight means for the seasons and climates the cloth suits; what the Super number does and does not tell me about durability; how the weave affects drape, crease-recovery and how the cloth will wear; and what this cloth is well and badly suited to. Be explicit that a higher Super number is a measure of fibre fineness, not of quality or longevity, and that finer often means more delicate. If the mill or bunch is one you cannot verify, say so rather than describing it.

The Fit Diagnostician

Most fit complaints are described in the wrong vocabulary, which is why they do not get fixed.

I will describe a problem with how a jacket, trouser or shirt fits. Translate it into the language a tailor uses, so I can ask for the right alteration. For each issue: name it as a tailor would; explain what causes it structurally; say whether it is fixable, partly fixable, or built into the garment; and say what the alteration involves and what it risks. Where a problem cannot be fixed on a finished garment, say so plainly. Do not tell me the garment looks fine, and do not suggest I buy something else; assume I want to understand the garment I have.

The Glossary Translator

The trade’s vocabulary is half Italian, half nineteenth-century English, and mostly undefined online.

Act as a menswear glossary. I will paste a sentence, a shop description or a listing containing terms I do not know. For each term: give a one-line definition; say which tradition it comes from (Neapolitan, Savile Row, Parisian, American, shoemaking, textile); and say whether it describes a construction, a shape, a material or a piece of marketing. Flag separately any term that sounds technical but has no agreed meaning in the trade. There are several, and they are used to imply craft that may not be there.

The Provenance Checker

“Handmade in Italy” is a phrase with at least four meanings and no legal one.

I will paste a brand’s description of how a garment is made. Break the claim into its parts and tell me, for each: what it would mean if strictly true; what weaker thing it might also mean; and what a buyer would need to ask to tell the difference. Pay particular attention to: where cutting happens versus where sewing happens; what "handmade", "hand-finished" and "hand-stitched" each imply about the number of operations; canvas construction versus fusing; and whether a named country refers to assembly, finishing or the whole garment. Do not accuse the brand of anything; set out what is and is not established by the wording.

The Shoe Construction Analyst

Sole construction determines whether a shoe can be resoled, and almost every buyer learns this too late.

I will describe or link a pair of shoes. Identify, as far as the description allows: the sole construction (hand-welted, Goodyear-welted, Blake, Blake-rapid, Norwegian, cemented); what that means for resoling, water resistance and flexibility; what the leather is likely to be and what that means for care; and what the lasting method implies about fit. State clearly which of these you can determine from the description and which you are inferring. If the description does not say how the shoe is constructed (most do not), say that this is itself informative.

Comment ce site utilise lui-même l'IA

Openly, and in three places. Ask the Archive answers questions from a slice of this database and is forbidden to add anything from its own training. Translation of the interface into the site’s other fifteen languages is machine-generated from an English key list. And research assistance is used in compiling and cross-checking records, never to write a fact into the database that no source supports.
