Ralph Lauren Purple Label

Ralph Lauren Purple Label is the top line of Ralph Lauren menswear, with high-quality suits mostly made in Italy in an English and Italian style.

Purple Label is Ralph Lauren's luxury menswear line, introduced in the 1990s. The tailoring is predominantly made in Italy by established manufacturers to a high standard, and the aesthetic draws on English and Italian traditions rather than on American ones.

What it actually is

A luxury line manufactured in Italy, with canvassed construction and good cloth, sold under an American brand whose main business is at a completely different price point. That combination confuses people, and the confusion works both ways: some dismiss it because of the name, and some buy the name rather than the garment.

The clothing is good. It is also priced against Italian houses that do not carry a mass-market brand's overheads, and the comparison is worth making directly.

Ralph Lauren's contribution

Beyond the product, Ralph Lauren's influence on how men dress is difficult to overstate. He did not design a new silhouette; he assembled an existing vocabulary (English country dress, Ivy, western, military) into a coherent and enormously legible aesthetic, and sold it globally for fifty years. That is a genuine contribution to menswear and it is separable from any judgement about the clothes.

Comparing it honestly

The construction and the cloth stand comparison with Italian houses at similar prices, because in most cases it is the same country and often comparable factories. What a buyer is additionally paying for is a retail operation, a marketing apparatus and a brand at a scale the Italian houses do not have. That is not an argument against buying it. It is an argument for trying a Canali or a Corneliani alongside it before deciding, which very few people do because the shops are nothing alike.
