Tom Ford

A designer's idea of a suit (wide lapel, strong shoulder, high armhole) made in Italy at a very high price.

Tom Ford launched his menswear line in 2005 with a deliberately assertive silhouette: a wide peak lapel, a strong shoulder, a high armhole and a close body. The clothing is made in Italy to a good standard. Zegna acquired a controlling interest in the fashion business in 2023.

The silhouette

The Tom Ford suit is a specific and consistent proposition: wide peak lapels on both single- and double-breasted coats, a built shoulder, a high armhole, and a body cut close through the waist. It descends visually from 1970s tailoring, and it is designed to be noticed.

It is well made (the manufacturing is Italian, the construction is canvassed) and it is very expensive for ready-to-wear. Whether the price reflects the making or the name is a question the customer can answer by handling comparable Italian tailoring at half the money.

Ownership

The beauty business was sold to Estée Lauder in 2023; Zegna acquired a controlling interest in the fashion business in the same transaction. The clothing continues to be made in Italy.

The fit

Cut close through the chest and waist with a high armhole and a strong shoulder, which is a demanding combination. It flatters a lean, broad-shouldered figure and is unforgiving of anything else, and the silhouette does not adapt: it is the same statement in every cloth.

The evening wear is the strongest part of the range, because the assertiveness of the cut suits black tie better than it suits a business suit.
