Madrid
Madrid has a small, old tailoring trade making structured, formal clothes, with more court and ceremonial dress than anywhere else in Europe.
Madrid's bespoke tailoring is structured, formal and closely tied to court and ceremonial dress. The trade is small, old, and has exported cutters to Paris and London for a century.
Formality as a specialism
Spanish tailoring leans structured, nearer to Paris and London than to Naples, and Madrid retains a strong line in morning dress, dinner jackets and the ceremonial clothing a monarchy generates. Several houses have been in the same family for generations.
The city's wider influence has travelled through people rather than reputation: Joseph Camps, who founded Camps de Luca in Paris, was a Spanish cutter, and Spanish tailors have long been part of the Parisian trade.
The trade
Small, long-established and heavily weighted towards formal and ceremonial work: morning dress, evening dress, and the clothing a monarchy and its institutions generate. Several houses have been in the same family for generations.
The cutting is structured (canvassed chests, defined shoulders) and closer to Parisian and English practice than to anything Italian.
Shoes
Spain is one of Europe's largest footwear manufacturers, concentrated in Alicante province and in Mallorca. A great deal of Goodyear-welted footwear sold under Italian, British and American names is made there.
Carmina, in Mallorca, is the best-known Spanish maker selling under its own name, and it has done more than anyone to establish that a properly welted shoe need not cost what Northampton charges.
