The blazer, and two stories about it

The blazer, a navy jacket often with metal buttons, is said to come from a Cambridge rowing club or HMS Blazer, though neither story is proven.

The blazer, a navy odd jacket, traditionally with metal buttons, has two competing origin stories: the brightly coloured jackets of the Lady Margaret Boat Club at Cambridge, and the jackets issued to the crew of HMS Blazer. Both are repeated everywhere and neither is well evidenced.

The two stories

The rowing account holds that the Lady Margaret Boat Club's scarlet jackets were called blazers for their colour, and that the word later attached to club jackets generally and then to the navy jacket specifically.

The naval account holds that the captain of HMS Blazer dressed his crew in navy jackets with brass buttons ahead of a royal inspection, and that the garment took the ship's name.

Both are plausible, both are repeated as settled fact, and neither rests on contemporary documentation that survives scrutiny. This site records both and endorses neither.

What is reasonably clear

That the navy jacket with metal buttons emerges from a combination of naval, rowing and club dress during the nineteenth century; that club and school blazers in stripes and bright colours are a parallel and genuinely documented tradition; and that the word has since been diluted to mean any odd jacket.

The dilution is not worth fighting. But the distinction between a blazer (navy, metal buttons, club origins) and a sport coat is real, and occasionally useful.

Why origin stories in menswear are so unreliable

Because the trade has never had an archive habit. Tailors kept order books when they kept anything, manufacturers kept nothing, and the histories were written afterwards by enthusiasts working from anecdote.

Where documentation does exist (Henry Poole's ledgers, museum accessions, patent records), the stories are checkable and frequently turn out to be true. Where it does not, confidence in the telling is not evidence.
