Fresco

Fresco is a loosely woven wool suiting of tightly twisted yarn that lets air straight through and resists creases, making it ideal for hot weather.

Fresco is a plain-woven worsted made from tightly twisted yarn with deliberate gaps between the threads. Air passes straight through it, the high twist makes it springy and crease-resistant, and it tailors beautifully. It is the cloth experienced buyers reach for in heat, and it is a difficult sell in a shop because it feels scratchy in the hand.

How it works

Two things. The yarn is spun with a very high twist, which makes it wiry and resilient: it springs back instead of creasing. And the cloth is woven open, with visible space between the threads, so air moves through it rather than being trapped. The result is a suiting that at 11 or 12 ounces is cooler to wear than a 9-ounce plain worsted, because weight matters less than porosity. It also holds a shoulder and tailors properly, which very light cloths do not.

The shop problem

Fresco feels wiry and slightly harsh between finger and thumb, and it looks plain and rather rough on the roll. Customers pick it up, put it down, and choose something softer that will be unwearable in July.

The name is associated above all with Hardy Minnis, whose Fresco bunch is the reference version, and similar high-twist cloths are made by several other merchants. Anything described as high-twist, open-weave worsted is in the same family.

Buying it

Ignore the hand. The wiry, dry feel that puts people off in the shop is the high twist that makes the cloth work, and it softens somewhat in the finished garment without losing the resilience.

Ask for it by construction rather than by name: high-twist, open-weave worsted, 10 to 13 ounces. Several merchants weave one, and Minnis's Fresco is the reference rather than the only option.
