Sea Island cotton
Sea Island is a rare cotton with some of the longest fibres of any, making exceptionally smooth, silky cloth, though the name is often used falsely.
Sea Island is an extra-long staple cotton, historically grown on the islands off the southeastern United States and now principally in the West Indies. Its fibres are among the longest of any cotton, producing an exceptionally smooth, silky, lustrous cloth. Genuine production is tiny and certified; the name is used far more widely than the cotton is grown.
Why it is different
Staple length. Sea Island fibre is markedly longer than ordinary cotton, so the yarn spun from it has fewer fibre ends per centimetre, which means a smoother surface, more lustre, greater strength and much less pilling. Cloth woven from it has a distinctive soft, almost silky handle that survives laundering.
The historical crop collapsed in the American southeast after the boll weevil infestations of the early twentieth century. What is grown today comes principally from the West Indies, in very small quantity, under a certification scheme.
The name problem
World Sea Island cotton production is a rounding error against global cotton output, and considerably less than the quantity of clothing described as Sea Island would require. Where a garment carries a certification and a traceable source, the claim is meaningful; where it says only “Sea Island quality” or uses the name descriptively, it is not. This is the general lesson of luxury textiles: the specific, certifiable claim is worth something and the atmospheric one is worth nothing.
What certification looks like
Genuine West Indian Sea Island cotton is grown under a certification scheme with a traceable chain from crop to cloth, and garments made from it normally carry documentation naming it. Where a shirt says only 'Sea Island' with no reference to certification or origin, the word is being used descriptively. This is not a trivial distinction. Total certified production is small enough that it could not clothe a fraction of the shirts the phrase appears on.
