Dormeuil

Dormeuil is a Paris cloth merchant founded in 1842 to sell English cloth in France, now known for rare-fibre fabrics and very expensive limited ranges.

Dormeuil was founded in Paris in 1842 to import English cloth into France, and became one of the great international merchant houses. It is known for high-end and exotic-fibre cloths and for a long-running series of very fine, very expensive limited bunches.

The merchant model at the top

Dormeuil's position has always been at the luxurious end: superfine wools, blends with cashmere, vicuña and other rare fibres, and named collections issued in limited quantity. The cloths are woven to its specification by mills it does not own.

The house has also been unusually good at branding cloth, which is a real skill and occasionally a substitute for one. A named exclusive bunch may be a genuinely exceptional weave, or a good weave with a story; the way to tell is to handle it against a comparable cloth at half the price.

History

Founded in Paris in 1842 to import English cloth into France, a business that existed because English worsted was then unmatched and French tailors wanted it. The house later commissioned its own cloth and grew into an international merchant.

It remains family-connected and operates internationally, with a particular presence in the Japanese and Middle Eastern markets.

The limited bunches

Dormeuil has issued named, limited cloths for decades: very fine wools, blends with cashmere and rarer fibres, sometimes with a stated total length woven. They command substantial premiums and are among the most expensive suitings available.

Some are genuinely exceptional weaves. Some are good cloths with a strong story. The way to tell them apart is to handle one against a comparable cloth at a third of the price, which any honest tailor will let you do.

Selling English cloth to the French

The house was built on importing English cloth into France at a time when English weaving was the international standard, and that origin still shapes the range: English character, French presentation, and a long habit of the very high-end novelty cloth, the rare fibres and the conspicuous blends. It is a merchant house, and its books are among the most widely carried in tailors' shops worldwide.
