Shirtmaker · Hong Kong · Founded 1953

Ascot Chang

Ascot Chang is a Hong Kong shirtmaker founded in 1953, with shops there and in New York, that cuts each customer their own pattern.

Ascot Chang was founded in Hong Kong in 1953 by a shirtmaker trained in the Shanghainese tradition. It cuts an individual pattern, makes in its own workroom, and has shops in Hong Kong and New York. It is the counterexample to the city's reputation for fast, thin tailoring.

The Shanghainese line

Chang trained in the Shanghai shirtmaking trade before establishing in Hong Kong, and the house descends directly from that lineage: precise, structured, technically exacting work with a strong emphasis on collar construction.

It is worth naming explicitly because Hong Kong's international reputation was set by a different tier of the trade entirely, the 24-hour suit, and it obscures workshops like this one.

The service

An individual pattern, a fitting, and production in the house's own workroom. Cloth is held in depth in Hong Kong, and the New York shop serves the American market directly.

Minimum orders apply to bespoke, as they do everywhere at this level.

Placing it

Against the London and Neapolitan houses, Ascot Chang competes on price and turnaround rather than on hand work, and it is honest about that. The construction is machine-led with hand finishing where it matters.

For a well-made individually cut shirt at a moderate price it is among the more reliable options anywhere, and it is the clearest counterexample to Hong Kong's reputation for speed over substance.

Trunk shows let a house take orders and hold fittings away from its own workshop. Dates move; treat this as the pattern, not a calendar, and confirm with the house.
