Church's

Church's is the best-known English shoe brand, owned by Prada since 1999, and quality now varies across its range, so the name alone guarantees less.

Church's has made shoes in Northampton since 1873 and is the best-known English shoe brand internationally. It has been owned by Prada since 1999. The Northampton factory continues, but the range now includes production of varying specification, and the name alone is a weaker signal than it once was.

Ownership and range

Prada acquired Church's in 1999. The Northampton factory continues to make Goodyear-welted shoes, and the core English-made range remains a solid product. The brand's wider offering has broadened considerably, including footwear made to different specifications elsewhere. The practical advice is the same one this site gives about every large brand: read the specification of the particular shoe rather than the reputation of the name on it.

The English-made range

The core Northampton range remains Goodyear-welted, leather-lined and leather-soled, on the house's own lasts, and it is a competent shoe at its price. The most familiar models (the Consul, the Diplomat, the Shannon) have been in production for decades.

Where the brand's positioning has moved, the older models are the most reliable point of reference.

What changed

The English-made welted range continues to be made in Northampton and remains a decent shoe. What has changed since 1999 is the breadth of the wider offering and the consistency of the signal the name sends.

Two specific things to check on any pair: whether it is made in England, and whether it is Goodyear-welted. Both are stated by the maker for the relevant models, and neither should be assumed from the brand.

upper insole welt outsole
How a sole is attached, and whether it can be replaced The welt in the two left-hand constructions carries the sole stitching, so the sole comes off without disturbing the upper. Hand welting cuts its ridge from the insole itself; Goodyear glues a canvas rib on, and that rib is the part that eventually fails. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
