Edward Green has made shoes in Northampton since 1890 and sits at the top of the English ready-to-wear market. Goodyear-welted, with hand-finished edges and a level of shaping most factory shoes do not attempt, its lasts (the 202, 82, 606 and others) are what buyers actually choose between.
Lasts, not models
Experienced buyers of Edward Green talk about last numbers rather than shoe names, because the last decides both the fit and the look. The 202 is the elegant, elongated one; the 82 is rounder and more accommodating; the 606 sits between. The same nominal size fits differently on each. This is the single most useful thing to understand when buying English ready-to-wear, and it applies across the good Northampton makers.
Where it sits

The 202 is long, elegant and narrow through the waist; the 82 is rounder with more room across the joint; the 606 sits between them; the 888 is a chiselled, slightly squared shape. The same nominal size in two of these will fit differently, and the maker's own advice is to choose the last first and the model second. This is why buying English ready-to-wear without trying it is risky, and why the resale market for these shoes trades on last numbers rather than model names.
