Saint Crispin's

Austrian method, Romanian workshop, and a made-to-order shoe close to bespoke in construction.

Saint Crispin's was founded in Austria and makes in Romania, producing hand-welted shoes to order with a fitting process closer to bespoke than to ready-to-wear. Its hallmarks are a very close waist, a hand-lasted upper and an unusual degree of hand construction for a shoe sold from a size run.

Between made-to-order and bespoke

Saint Crispin's occupies a category most makers do not: shoes hand-welted and hand-lasted like bespoke, but ordered from a range of lasts rather than from a last carved for the customer. Adjustments to the last are possible, which pushes it further towards bespoke than the term made-to-order usually implies.

The Austrian and Hungarian lasting tradition is visible in the construction: a firm, close waist and a shoe that holds its shape hard.

Fit and lasts

The house offers a range of lasts with different toe shapes and fits, and made-to-order commissions can include adjustments to length, width and instep. That is a meaningful degree of personalisation short of a carved last.

The shoes run firm and take some breaking in. The hand-lasted upper and the leather insole mould to the foot over several weeks, which is characteristic of the construction rather than a sizing error.

Where it sits

Between a made-to-order shoe on a stock last and a bespoke shoe on a carved one, there is a category most makers do not offer: hand-welted, hand-lasted construction on a last that can be adjusted for the customer. Saint Crispin's occupies it. The practical consequence is a shoe with bespoke construction and much of the fit at a fraction of bespoke money, with the caveat that a genuinely unusual foot still needs a last carved for it.

upper insole welt outsole
How a sole is attached, and whether it can be replaced The welt in the two left-hand constructions carries the sole stitching, so the sole comes off without disturbing the upper. Hand welting cuts its ridge from the insole itself; Goodyear glues a canvas rib on, and that rib is the part that eventually fails. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
