B&Tailor
The Seoul house that put Korean tailoring on the international map, largely through photographs.
B&Tailor is a family bespoke house in Seoul, among the first Korean workshops to build an international clientele. It cuts a soft, Italian-influenced coat adapted to a slimmer build, and it travels widely for fittings.
Building a scene
B&Tailor is the house most responsible for the international awareness of Korean bespoke, having been unusually visible online from early on and having travelled to Europe, the United States and Japan for fittings.
The coat is soft and light in the Italian manner, cut close and short, with a narrower shoulder than a Neapolitan original, the adaptation that characterises the whole Seoul trade.
The house cut
Soft shoulder with light gathering, a light chest canvas, a high armhole, a close waist and a coat shorter than the Neapolitan original. The lapel is cut narrower in proportion to the narrower shoulder.
Construction is largely hand-done in the Italian manner, and the house also offers a made-to-measure programme and ready-to-wear alongside bespoke.
What the Seoul cut solves
A Neapolitan block assumes a certain chest depth and shoulder width. Applied unchanged to a slimmer frame it produces a coat that looks borrowed: the shoulder overhangs, the chest is empty, the waist sits wrong.
The Seoul adaptation narrows the shoulder, raises and closes the waist, shortens the coat and reduces the lapel in proportion. Applied well the result reads as a coat designed for the wearer rather than translated for him, and that adaptation is the technical achievement of the whole Korean trade.
Seoul, on its own terms
B&Tailor is the house that made Korean tailoring internationally visible, and the coat is not a copy of any European school. It takes the Neapolitan softness through the chest, sets it on a slightly cleaner and more structured shoulder than Naples would use, and cuts it for a body and a climate the European houses were not cutting for.
The house also demonstrates something the trade has been slow to acknowledge: the strongest growth in classical tailoring over the past two decades has been in Asia, and the skill has followed the demand.
