Martin Greenfield Clothiers
Martin Greenfield Clothiers is a Brooklyn suit factory, run by a Holocaust survivor, that makes custom suits and produces for several American brands.
Martin Greenfield Clothiers is one of the last tailored-clothing factories in New York. Martin Greenfield, a Holocaust survivor who learned to sew in a concentration camp, worked his way from the floor to ownership of the factory; it makes bespoke and produces for a number of American brands.
The last of an industry
New York's tailored-clothing industry once employed tens of thousands of people in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Greenfield's factory is among the very few survivors, and it operates as both a bespoke house and a contract manufacturer for American brands, a combination that says a good deal about how the domestic industry now sustains itself.
Martin Greenfield's own history (deported to Auschwitz as a teenager, taught to sew there, arriving in New York after the war and starting on the factory floor of the firm he eventually bought) is documented in his memoir and is not a marketing story.
The house cut
American in the older sense: a soft but present shoulder, a full canvassed chest, a straight body and a longer coat than contemporary Italian cutting. It accommodates a larger frame considerably better than most European ready-to-wear.
Bespoke commissions involve fittings in Brooklyn; the factory also produces made-to-measure and contract work on the same floor.
Factory and bespoke
The same floor produces contract manufacturing for American brands and individual bespoke commissions, which makes the operation unusually legible: the construction methods are the same, and what differs is the pattern and the number of fittings.
For an American customer this is one of the few remaining ways to have a suit made domestically at a price well below European bespoke. The trade-off is a factory process rather than a workshop one, with the consistency and the limits that implies.
