Sartoria Corcos

A Florentine coat cut in Tokyo, by a tailor who learned it in Florence.

Sartoria Corcos is the Tokyo workshop of Kotaro Miyahira, who trained in Florence, including at Liverano. The coat is Florentine (wide lapel, rounded chest, soft shoulder), executed with the finish that characterises Japanese bespoke.

Faithful transmission

Corcos is the clearest example of how the Japanese trade works: a maker goes to the source, learns the method properly, comes home and keeps it. The result is a coat that is recognisably Florentine rather than a Japanese interpretation of one.

What is added is finish. The internal work and the small operations are carried out to a standard that is the Japanese signature across disciplines.

The coat

Florentine: a wide lapel with a full belly, a rounded chest, a soft shoulder and a front cut with minimal darting. The construction is light, with a soft canvas rather than a full English one.

The finishing is where the Japanese training shows: even, precise, and carried into the interior of the garment to a standard the Florentine original does not require.

Commissioning in Tokyo

A small workshop with a long waiting list, working principally for a domestic clientele. Fittings happen in Tokyo, and the lead time is longer than a European equivalent because the output is smaller.

The coat that results is Florentine in every technical respect (the wide lapel, the round chest, the minimal dart), which makes this one of the more interesting cases in the site: a style preserved more exactly abroad than at home.

Die Schulter, fünf Varianten Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagramm erstellt für Il Sartoriale.
