Drake's

Drake's is a London tie maker turned full menswear brand, known for relaxed, softly made clothes in English cloth with little shoulder padding.

Drake's began in 1977 making scarves and ties in London and still makes ties in its own East London workshop. It has grown into a full menswear range with a recognisable position: English cloth and Italian softness, in a relaxed, unstructured register.

Ties first

The tie business is the origin and remains the technical foundation: hand-rolled edges, bias cut, made in London. A great deal of the house's authority in the wider range comes from having a workshop rather than a sourcing department.

The clothing is largely made in Italy and Portugal to the house's specification, in a soft, unstructured register that pairs English cloth with Italian making.

The tie workshop

Ties are cut on the bias, folded around a wool interlining and closed with a slip stitch by hand in the house's own East London workshop. The edges of the accompanying pocket squares are hand rolled.

Owning the workshop means the house can make small runs, unusual cloths and its own constructions, which is why the range is broader and stranger than a sourcing operation would produce.

The clothing

Made largely in Italy and Portugal to the house's specification, in a soft and unstructured register: light canvas or none, natural shoulders, generous cuts. English cloth is used heavily, which produces a recognisable combination: a tweed or flannel from Yorkshire or Somerset, made up the way a Neapolitan would make it.

The register is relaxed rather than formal, and the house has been influential in moving classic English clothing away from the suit and towards separates.

From ties outward

Drake's began by making ties and scarves, including a great deal of work for other names, and expanded into a full wardrobe without losing the thing that made the ties good: a strong, consistent house taste in colour and pattern. That is rarer than it sounds. Most accessory makers that expand into clothing dilute; the ones that do not are usually the ones where the taste, rather than the category, was the actual asset.
