Biella
Biella is where much of the world's fine suit cloth is spun and woven, by mills like Loro Piana and Vitale Barberis Canonico.
Biella is not a tailoring city; it is where the cloth comes from. A cluster of spinners, weavers and finishers in the Alpine foothills of Piedmont supplies mills' cloth to tailors and brands worldwide, including Vitale Barberis Canonico, Loro Piana and Carlo Barbera.
Why here
Water. Wool processing (scouring, dyeing, finishing) needs a great deal of soft water, and the streams coming off the Alps into the Biellese valleys are exceptionally soft. Mills were established along them centuries ago and the industry never left.
What sits there now is unusual: a full supply chain within a few dozen kilometres. Raw fibre arrives, and spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing all happen locally, often in firms that have specialised in one step for generations. That concentration is why a Biellese mill can develop a new cloth quickly, and why the district survived the collapse of textile manufacturing almost everywhere else in western Europe.
Visiting
Biella is not set up for tourism and most mills do not admit visitors, though several run archives and occasional open days. Vitale Barberis Canonico maintains a historical archive of its own cloths going back generations; the Fondazione Sella and the wider industrial heritage of the valley are documented locally.
For a cloth-minded traveller, Milan is ninety minutes away and is where most of the commercial activity around Biellese cloth actually happens.
