Germany
Germany is better known for well-made factory tailoring and technical fabrics than custom tailoring, though the Rhineland and Berlin have a few excellent custom workshops.
Germany has never had a bespoke tradition on the scale of England or Italy, but it has an excellent industrial tailoring sector, a serious technical-textiles industry, and, in the Rhineland and Berlin , a handful of bespoke workshops of real quality.
Manufacturing more than craft
The German contribution is at the factory end. German makers have long produced tailored clothing to a consistent standard for the domestic market and for brands elsewhere, and German machinery (cutting, pressing, sewing) is used throughout the international trade.
The bespoke trade is small and dispersed rather than concentrated in one street. Where it exists it tends towards a clean, structured coat, and several German cutters have trained in Vienna, whose influence is audible in the way they talk about shoulders.
What is actually made here
Tailored clothing at factory scale to a consistent standard, both for the domestic market and under contract for brands elsewhere. Also a substantial technical-textiles industry and the machinery: cutting, pressing, sewing, used throughout the international trade.
The bespoke trade exists but is dispersed rather than concentrated in one street, which makes it harder to document than the London or Naples trades.
The Viennese influence
Several German cutters trained in Vienna, and where a distinctly German bespoke style can be identified it tends towards a clean, structured coat with a defined shoulder, closer to Austrian practice than to English or Italian.
Loden and the Alpine country wardrobe are the other inheritance shared with Austria, and both have been absorbed into international menswear largely without attribution.
