Spain
Spain keeps a formal, firmly built tailoring tradition alive in Madrid and is one of Europe's biggest shoemakers, making many shoes sold under other countries' brands.
Spanish bespoke centres on Madrid, where a small number of houses maintain a formal, structured tradition with roots in court and ceremonial dress. Spain is also one of Europe's largest shoe manufacturers, and much of what is sold under other countries' brands is made there.
Madrid
The Madrid trade is small, old and formal. Its work leans structured, closer to English or Parisian practice than to Neapolitan softness, and it retains a strong line in ceremonial and morning dress, which is a consequence of having a monarchy and a great many occasions requiring it.
The Spanish contribution to the international scene has been indirect but real: Spanish cutters trained in Madrid have gone on to work in Paris and London, and the Camps de Luca house in Paris was founded by a Spanish cutter, Joseph Camps.
Shoes at scale
Spain, and Alicante province in particular, is one of the largest shoe manufacturing regions in Europe. A great deal of Goodyear-welted footwear sold under Italian, British and American brand names is made there, competently, at a lower cost than northern European production, and generally without the brand saying so. This is not a scandal, but it is a reason to ask where a shoe is actually made rather than where the brand is from.
What Madrid cuts
Structured rather than soft: a canvassed chest, a defined shoulder and a formal line, closer to Paris or London than to Naples. The trade is small, old and heavily weighted towards ceremonial and formal work.
The Spanish contribution internationally has travelled through people. Cutters trained in Madrid have worked in Paris and London for a century, and Camps de Luca in Paris was co-founded by a Spanish cutter.
