Bespoke vs made-to-measure

Bespoke means a pattern drawn from scratch for you and corrected over fittings, while made-to-measure adjusts a standard pattern, and hand stitching is not the difference.

Bespoke means an individual paper pattern, cut by hand, assembled loosely and corrected through fittings in which the garment is taken apart. Made-to-measure modifies an existing block to your measurements, usually with one fitting or none. Both can contain hand work; only one is cut for you.

Why the words are abused

There is no legal definition of bespoke in most jurisdictions. A shop can measure you, send the numbers abroad, deliver in ten days and call the result bespoke without breaking any rule.

Ask three questions instead of relying on the word. Is a paper pattern drafted for me alone? Is it kept? Will you take the garment apart and recut it if the fitting shows a problem? A real bespoke house answers all three immediately and without qualification.

Which is right for you

The advantage of bespoke grows the further your body is from average. An asymmetric shoulder, a prominent blade, a difference between left and right: these are what a drafted pattern handles and a modified block eventually cannot.

If you are reasonably close to a standard size, an excellent made-to-measure garment will fit you very well for a fraction of the money, and the remaining gap is largely construction and finish rather than fit. Saying so is not a fashionable position and it is the honest one.

The middle ground

Good ready-to-wear altered by a competent tailor sits below both and is where most people should start. Sleeve length, trouser length, jacket waist and back can all be adjusted, and the improvement is dramatic.

The alteration budget is the highest-return money in clothing, and almost nobody spends it.

The three services, and where the pattern comes from The distinction is the pattern, not the amount of hand sewing; a good made-to-measure garment may contain plenty of it. Only the bottom row draws a pattern from nothing and corrects it on your body. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
