Shell cordovan
Shell cordovan is a dense, rare shoe leather from a horse's hindquarters that ripples rather than creases and is the most sought-after there is.
Shell cordovan is made from an oval layer of dense connective tissue beneath the skin of a horse's hindquarters. It has no grain in the ordinary sense, so it does not crease; it ripples. It takes months to tan, yields two shells per animal, and is the most sought-after shoe leather there is.
What it actually is
Under the skin of a horse's rump lies a dense, tightly packed layer of collagen: the shell. It is cut out, shaved down and tanned, over a process that takes several months in a pit tannery. Each animal yields two shells, each large enough for roughly one pair of shoes.
Because the fibre structure is uniform rather than layered like a hide, cordovan does not have a grain surface to crack. Where calf creases into sharp lines across the vamp, cordovan forms soft rolling ripples instead. That behaviour, plus a deep glassy lustre, is why people become peculiar about it.
The trade-offs
- It is heavy and dense, so cordovan shoes are noticeably weightier and stiffer than calf.
- It marks with water (spots can appear and take time to fade) despite its reputation for toughness.
- It is slow to break in, and then extremely long-lived.
- Supply is genuinely constrained by the number of horses, and waiting lists reflect that.
Horween
The Horween Leather Company in Chicago is the tannery most associated with shell cordovan and is named on the products that use it, an unusual degree of transparency in a supply chain that is normally silent. A handful of other tanneries, including in Japan and Europe, also produce shell.
Care
Cordovan needs less than calf and different treatment. Brush with a horsehair brush and use cream sparingly; heavy waxing clogs the surface and dulls the characteristic glassy lustre. A deer-bone or a smooth burnishing tool worked over the surface restores shine better than polish does.
Water spots will appear and most fade with time and brushing. Do not attempt to force them out with heat or solvent.
