Lanificio Drago
A Biellese weaver known for fine, light cloths and a very large seasonal range.
Drago is a Biella mill weaving worsteds and blends, with a reputation for fine, light and summer-weight suitings. Its cloth is widely used by Italian tailors and appears in a number of merchants' books.
Position
Drago sits in the substantial middle of the Biellese trade: a serious weaving operation with a broad seasonal offering, particularly strong in the lighter end where Italian tailoring lives.
Like most mills of its size, much of its output reaches customers under a merchant's name rather than its own, which is normal and worth knowing when a bunch's provenance matters to you.
What it weaves
Worsteds and blends across a broad seasonal range, with particular strength in the lighter weights that Italian tailoring uses: summer cloths, wool-silk-linen mixes, and fine plain weaves in the eight to ten ounce range.
The mill supplies both its own bunches and cloth that reaches tailors under merchants' names, which is the normal arrangement for a Biellese weaver of its size.
Where it sits
In the substantial middle of the Biella trade: a serious weaving operation without the brand recognition of its largest neighbours, competing on range and on price rather than on name.
For a customer this is often good value. A Drago summer cloth and a more famous mill's equivalent are frequently closer in the finished garment than the price difference suggests.
Fine and light
Drago works at the fine, lightweight end of the Biellese range, and the very large seasonal collection is part of the proposition: a tailor wanting something specific in a light cloth is likely to find it here.
A general caution that applies to the whole category rather than to this mill: very fine, very light cloth is harder to tailor, harder to press and less durable. Fineness is a specification, not a grade.
