Vitale Barberis Canonico
Vitale Barberis Canonico is Italy's largest fine-wool mill, and if you own a mid- or upper-market Italian suit, its cloth may well be in it.
Vitale Barberis Canonico is a Biellese wool mill that spins, weaves and finishes in-house and supplies both its own merchant bunches and a very large volume of cloth to other brands. If you own an Italian suit in the middle or upper market, there is a reasonable chance the cloth came from here.
A vertical mill
VBC does the whole sequence (buying raw wool, combing, spinning, dyeing, weaving and finishing) within its own operation in the Biellese valleys. Very few textile businesses anywhere still do all of it, and it is why the mill can develop and adjust a cloth quickly rather than negotiating with four suppliers.
The volume is substantial by the standards of fine suiting. That has two consequences worth stating plainly: consistency is excellent, and a VBC cloth is not exclusive. Many merchant bunches sold under other names contain VBC cloth.
What it is known for
Reliable, well-behaved worsted suiting in the range a working wardrobe actually needs: plain weaves, twills, hopsacks and flannels, largely in the Super 100s to 130s range where the cloth is fine enough to be pleasant and robust enough to be worn.
The mill also maintains a historical archive of its own cloths and periodically reissues patterns from it, which is a genuine resource rather than a marketing exercise: the archive documents what Italian suiting actually looked like decade by decade.
The archive and the reissues
The mill keeps a documented archive of its own cloths going back generations and draws on it for periodic reissues. As with Fox in England, this is a historical record as much as a design resource: a continuous account of what Italian suiting looked like decade by decade.
For a customer it means access to weights and patterns that the contemporary market does not otherwise offer.
The traceability question
VBC has been more forthcoming than most mills about where its wool comes from, publishing information on its Australian and New Zealand sourcing and on the mill's environmental measures. Claims of this kind are self-reported across the whole industry, and this site records them as claims rather than as verified facts.
The general principle applies here as everywhere: a specific, checkable statement (a named farm, a certified standard, an audited figure) is worth something; a general commitment is worth noting and not more.
