Neapolitan shirtmaking

Naples treats a shirt the way it treats a jacket: soft, light, and assembled by hand wherever a hand does it better. The characteristic details are a soft unlined or lightly lined collar, a sleeve attached by hand with gathering at the shoulder (the shirt equivalent of spalla camicia), and buttonholes worked by hand. The result is a shirt that moves with the wearer rather than resisting him, which is the same argument the Neapolitan jacket makes.

The workshop

Small, family-run, and organised around hand sewing to a degree that limits output. Shirts are cut individually and much of the assembly is done by hand rather than machine.

The house takes orders in Naples and on a travel schedule, and a first commission normally involves a trial shirt and a minimum order.

What hand sewing actually buys

A hand-attached collar can be eased around the neck seam in a way a machine cannot, so it sits closer without gripping. A hand-set sleeve allows the ease to be placed where the arm moves. Hand-sewn buttonholes are denser and hold their shape. None of these is visible at conversational distance. All of them affect how the shirt behaves on a body, which is the honest case for them.

Trunk shows let a house take orders and hold fittings away from its own workshop. Dates move; treat this as the pattern, not a calendar, and confirm with the house.
