Turnbull & Asser
Jermyn Street's best-known name, with a bespoke workroom behind the shop and a distinctive collar.
Turnbull & Asser has been on Jermyn Street since the nineteenth century and holds a royal warrant. It makes bespoke shirts to an individual pattern, with a characteristically substantial three-button cuff and a soft collar, alongside a large ready-to-wear business.
Bespoke behind the shopfront
Most of what is sold on Jermyn Street is ready-to-wear, and it is worth being clear which product you are looking at in any of these shops. Turnbull & Asser maintains a genuine bespoke service with a cut pattern and, traditionally, a trial shirt and a minimum order.
The house's ready-to-wear is well made and expensive, and is not the same thing. Both are legitimate; conflating them is what makes the street's reputation confusing.
The bespoke service
An individual paper pattern, a trial shirt in most cases, and traditionally a minimum first order of several shirts. The pattern is retained and refined for subsequent orders, which is the same logic as a tailor's.
Cloth is held in considerable depth in the Jermyn Street shop, including a large range of English and Swiss shirtings and a strong line in bolder patterns than the street's reputation suggests.
The details
The three-button turnback cuff is the house signature and is genuinely distinctive. Collars are cut with generous points and a soft interlining, which suits the English preference for a collar that rolls rather than stands rigid.
The shop itself is worth visiting for the cloth alone, and for the tie range, which is one of the better selections of English silk anywhere.
