László Vass
The Budapest workshop that kept the Hungarian shoemaking tradition intact through everything.
László Vass has made shoes in Budapest since the 1970s, continuing the Hungarian and Austrian shoemaking tradition through a period when it had almost no market. The house makes bespoke and made-to-order, and Vass co-authored the standard illustrated reference on handmade shoemaking.
A tradition preserved
Central European shoemaking (Hungarian, Austrian, Bohemian) was a great tradition that state socialism had no use for. Vass kept a workshop going through it, and the survival of the method is largely down to that.
The house style is distinctly Central European: a firm, robust shoe with a hard-lasted waist and a characteristic Budapest last with a rounded, generous toe.
Ordering
Made-to-order on the house's lasts is the usual route and takes some weeks; bespoke on a carved last takes considerably longer. Constructions include hand welting and Goodyear depending on the specification, and the house is precise about which.
Sizing follows Continental conventions and the Budapest last runs generously through the ball, so trying before ordering matters more here than with a narrow English last.
The book
Handmade Shoes for Men, co-written by Vass and Magda Molnár, is the standard illustrated account of bespoke shoemaking and the reason a great many people outside the trade understand how a shoe is built. It is cited throughout this site's shoemaking pages.
The Budapest last
A rounded, generous toe with a broad, low profile, the shape associated with Central European shoemaking and quite unlike an English or Italian last. It accommodates a wider foot comfortably and reads as substantial rather than elegant, which is the intention.
The house also offers narrower lasts, but the Budapest is what the name is known for and is the reason people seek it out.
Budapest, kept alive
The Hungarian tradition (a heavier, rounder shoe than the English one, often with a Norwegian or Goyser welt and visible hand-stitching at the seam) very nearly disappeared under state ownership, and László Vass's workshop is the main reason it did not.
The house style is distinctly not English: a fuller toe, a higher instep, and a build that prioritises longevity and repair over line. Buyers who arrive expecting a Northampton silhouette are often surprised, and the surprise is the tradition rather than a flaw.
