Yohei Fukuda
English method, Japanese execution, and one of the finest bespoke shoes made anywhere today.
Yohei Fukuda trained in England and makes hand-welted bespoke shoes in Tokyo. His work is characterised by an extremely close, sculpted waist, exceptionally fine welt stitching and a restrained finish, and it is widely regarded as among the best bespoke shoemaking in the world.
Method learned, then refined
Fukuda's construction is English (hand welting, a full leather build, conventional proportions), and the execution goes past what English workshops normally attempt: a waist trimmed extremely close, a very high stitch count on the welt, and a level of finish on the sole and edge that is essentially decorative. It is the clearest example of the Japanese pattern: take a European craft, learn it exactly, then apply a standard of finish the original tradition did not require.
What the finishing involves
A welt stitched at a very high density, a waist trimmed almost flush with the upper, a fiddleback sole, and an edge and heel finish worked to a polish. The visible stitching on the sole is close enough to require a specialist awl and a great deal of time.
None of it affects how the shoe walks. It is craft performed for its own sake, which is a legitimate thing to buy provided the buyer knows that is what it is.
Commissioning
A long waiting list, a first commission measured in a year or more, and a limited travel schedule. This is a small workshop and it does not scale.
What arrives is a shoe finished to a standard that has to be handled to be understood: a welt stitched at a density most makers do not attempt, a waist trimmed almost to the upper, and a sole finish that is closer to cabinetmaking than to shoemaking.
English method, Japanese execution
Yohei Fukuda trained in England and makes in Tokyo, and the shoes are widely regarded as among the finest bespoke work being done anywhere. The construction is orthodox English; what distinguishes it is the consistency of execution: the closeness of the waist, the regularity of the sole stitching, the finish of surfaces that will never be seen once the shoe is worn. That last category is the honest measure of a bespoke shoemaker, because it is the part nobody is checking.
