Trouser waistband construction

The least glamorous part of a suit, and the part that decides whether the trousers sit where you put them.

A well-made trouser waistband is built rather than folded: a curtain hangs inside to grip the shirt, the band is split at the back so it can be let out, and side adjusters or braces buttons carry the trouser at the natural waist. These are the details that separate trousers from a suit and trousers from a chain store.

The curtain

A strip of cloth, often striped cotton or a soft brushed material, hangs free from the inside of the waistband. It grips the shirt to keep it tucked, it hides the internal seams and the pocket bags, and because it hangs rather than being sewn flat, it allows the waistband to be let out later.

Cheap trousers have a waistband folded and stitched flat with no curtain, which is why the shirt escapes and why letting them out is difficult.

Split back and fishtail

A split waistband is cut in two at the centre back seam so a tailor can let it out or take it in without dismantling the trouser. Almost every bespoke trouser has one, along with a generous inlay at the seat.

The fishtail back (a raised, tapered extension of the waistband at the centre back, cut like a fish tail) exists to carry braces. It sits higher at the back so the braces buttons are placed correctly and the trouser is held up from the shoulders rather than clamped at the waist.

Adjusters versus belts

Side adjusters (buckled or button tabs on each hip) hold a trouser at the waist without a belt, which keeps the line of the trouser clean under a jacket and avoids bunching cloth at the waistband. They work only if the trouser fits properly to begin with; they are for fine adjustment, not for holding up a trouser that is two inches too large.

Braces do the job better than either, because they suspend the trouser from the shoulders and allow it to hang from the natural waist without gripping. This is the reason mid-century trousers look different: they were cut to be held up from above.

Adding what is missing

Brace buttons can be added to almost any trouser by a competent alterations tailor for very little. Side adjusters can sometimes be added, depending on the waistband construction. A curtain can be added; a split back seam usually cannot be created after the fact if the inlay is not there.

For someone with good ready-to-wear trousers, brace buttons are the single highest-value alteration available.
