Brunello Cucinelli
Brunello Cucinelli is a cashmere brand based in the Umbrian village of Solomeo, known for soft, muted, expensive clothes and its founder's "humanistic capitalism" philosophy.
Brunello Cucinelli built a cashmere business from the village of Solomeo in Umbria from 1978, restoring the village as the company grew and articulating a well-publicised philosophy of 'humanistic capitalism'. The clothing is soft, muted, expensive and unusually consistent.
The product
Cashmere knitwear was the foundation and remains the core: soft, in a restricted palette of greys, taupes and creams, cut generously. The tailoring is unstructured and the whole range is coordinated to a degree that makes it easy to buy and easy to recognise. It is genuinely well made. It is also priced at a level that assumes the customer is buying the whole proposition, philosophy included.
Solomeo
The company restored the medieval village of Solomeo, built a theatre and a school of crafts there, and operates a stated policy of limiting working hours and paying above sector rates. These are documented and, by the standards of luxury manufacturing, unusual.
They are also, unavoidably, part of what the customer is buying, and the company is candid about that. This site notes both facts without adjudicating between them.
The fit
Cut generously by contemporary standards: roomy through the body, with soft unstructured shoulders and a relaxed line. That suits the aesthetic and it flatters a wider range of figures than close Italian cutting does.
The colour palette is deliberately narrow: greys, taupes, creams, soft browns and navy, coordinated so pieces combine easily. It is one of the reasons the clothing is easy to buy and one of the reasons a room full of it looks like a uniform.
The philosophy, and the knitwear
The company presents an unusually explicit set of commitments about how it treats the village it operates in, and those commitments are more substantiated than most corporate statements of the kind. They are also not what a customer is buying.
What a customer is buying is cashmere knitwear at the top of the market, and it should be judged on fibre quality, construction and how it wears, which is a straightforward assessment that the surrounding narrative tends to crowd out.
