Zegna
Zegna began as a wool mill in 1910 and is now one of the world's biggest luxury menswear companies, still weaving cloth and owning Thom Browne.
Zegna began in 1910 as a wool mill in the Biella foothills and grew into one of the largest luxury menswear businesses in the world. It still weaves, it makes clothing at every level from ready-to-wear to a bespoke service, and it owns Thom Browne and a controlling interest in Tom Ford's fashion business.
Mill first
Ermenegildo Zegna founded the mill at Trivero in 1910 and built it on buying the best raw wool available, an approach that included establishing long-term relationships with Australian growers and running fibre competitions that still exist. That upstream position is the through-line of the whole business. Zegna is a clothing group that happens to weave its own cloth, which very few of its competitors do.
Oasi and the wool sourcing
Zegna has long run competitions and premium schemes for the finest Australian and New Zealand wool clips, and publishes traceability claims covering a large share of its fibre. It also manages a substantial protected area in the hills above Trivero, planted from the 1930s. These are the company's own accounts, published rather than audited by this site, and are recorded here as claims. They are unusually specific ones, which is worth something.
The group
Zegna is now listed and owns Thom Browne outright and a controlling interest in the Tom Ford fashion business. It also manufactures for other brands. This makes the corporate map of luxury menswear less straightforward than the shopfronts suggest, and it is one of the reasons this site records ownership on every brand page.
Product runs from mainline ready-to-wear through Su Misura made-to-measure to a bespoke service. The specification varies considerably across that range, as it does at every large house.
Reading the range
Zegna's product spans a wide spread of construction and price, and the labels do not always make it obvious. The upper tailoring lines are canvassed and made in Italy; further down the range construction is lighter and the cut more commercial. Su Misura is the made-to-measure programme and sits above the mainline.
The cloth is a genuine differentiator throughout: even the mid-range garments use wool the company has bought and woven itself, which is not true of most competitors at any price.
Backwards integration, done early
Zegna started as a mill and moved forward into clothing, which is the opposite of the usual direction and much harder to reverse. A brand can commission cloth from anyone; a mill that also makes clothes controls the input and can develop a fabric for a garment rather than choosing one for it.
The group has since acquired other menswear names outright, and it is now one of the small number of companies through which a large share of the world's serious tailoring passes at some stage.
