Milan

Milano

Where Italian tailoring puts its jacket back on: cleaner, sharper and considerably more businesslike.

Milanese tailoring is structured where Neapolitan tailoring is soft: a full canvas, a defined shoulder, a clean chest and a restrained line, cut for a commercial city. Milan is also the headquarters of the Italian fashion industry and the closest major city to the Biella textile district.

The Milanese cut

Milan cuts a coat that means business. The chest is fully canvassed, the shoulder is defined and cleanly finished, the waist is suppressed but not dramatically, and the overall impression is precision rather than ease. It reads as less obviously handmade than a Neapolitan coat, which is the point. The handwork is there; it is not meant to be the first thing you notice.

The Caraceni name is central and confusing: several separate firms in Milan and Rome descend from the same family and trade under variations of the name. They are not one house, they are not interchangeable, and the history of who split from whom is genuinely disputed. Where this site records it, it says so.

The industry city

Milan is where Italian fashion is organised rather than made: showrooms, buying, the fashion weeks, the headquarters of the large groups. The Quadrilatero della Moda (Via Montenapoleone, Via della Spiga, Via Sant'Andrea and Via Manzoni) is the flagship district, and every large house has a shop in it.

For someone interested in how clothes are made rather than sold, the more relevant fact is proximity: Biella, the centre of Italian wool spinning and weaving, is about ninety minutes away, and much of the international cloth trade passes through Milan on its way somewhere else.
