The oxford shoe

An oxford is a lace-up shoe whose eyelet flaps are stitched under the front, giving a clean V and making it more formal than a derby.

An oxford is defined by closed lacing: the eyelet flaps are stitched underneath the front of the shoe, so they meet in a clean V. That single construction detail is what makes it more formal than a derby, where the flaps sit on top and are open at the bottom.

Closed versus open lacing

On an oxford, the eyelet tabs are attached under the vamp (the front of the shoe) so that when laced they close flush and the shoe presents an unbroken line. On a derby they are sewn on top, and the lacing opens out.

The consequence is both aesthetic and practical: an oxford looks cleaner and more formal, and it fits a narrower, lower-instepped foot better, because there is less adjustment available. A derby accommodates a high instep.

The hierarchy of formality

ShoeFormality
Plain-toe black oxfordThe most formal shoe short of an evening pump
Cap-toe black oxfordThe business standard
Brogued oxford (semi- or full-brogue)Less formal; the perforations are the decoration
Derby / blucherOpen lacing; less formal than any oxford
LoaferNo lacing; informal, though the market has pushed it upward
Colour moves the whole scale: a black shoe is more formal than the same shoe in brown.

Brogueing

The perforations are decorative now and were once functional: brogued shoes came from Irish and Scottish country footwear where the holes let water drain out after walking through bogs. Full brogue (wingtip), semi-brogue and quarter brogue describe how much of the shoe is decorated.

The rule that follows from the origin: the more brogueing, the more country the shoe, and the less appropriate with a formal suit.

Oxford: cordones cerrados
