Provincial in the good sense

Southern Italian shirtmaking is not concentrated in Naples; there are family workshops across the region with no shopfront and no marketing. Inglese is the clearest case of one of them reaching an international market.

The shirts are made in the southern manner (soft collars, hand-attached where it matters) at prices below the Neapolitan names, which is partly a matter of location and partly of not having a Chiaia address.

The house

Three generations in the same Pugliese town, making shirts with a high proportion of hand work (collar, sleeve head and buttonholes among them) and also producing a small range of ties and accessories.

Orders are taken directly and through specialist retailers, and the house travels for fittings.

Southern shirtmaking

The southern Italian approach to a shirt is the same as its approach to a jacket: soft, light, and assembled by hand wherever a hand does it better. Collars are unlined or very lightly lined and roll rather than standing. It is a distinctly different garment from an English shirt, and better suited to being worn without a tie.

Puglia, without leaving

The house reached an international clientele from a small town in Puglia rather than by moving to Milan or Naples, which is now possible in a way it was not twenty years ago and says something about how the trade has changed. Direct online ordering and trunk shows have made a workshop's location much less determining than its ability to communicate.

The shirts are Southern Italian in character (soft, light, unstructured), and the house also works extensively in linen, which the northern shirtmakers treat as a summer exception rather than a staple.
