Berluti
Berluti is a Paris shoemaker, now an LVMH menswear brand, famous for colouring leather by hand in see-through layers so the surface looks deep and varied.
Berluti was founded in Paris in 1895 and built its reputation on patina: colouring finished leather by hand in translucent layers, so the surface has depth and variation. It has been part of LVMH since 1993 and is now a full menswear house as well as a shoemaker, and it still offers bespoke.
Patina
Berluti's signature is applying colour to a finished shoe by hand, in layers, so that the leather ends up with tonal variation the tannery did not put there. It is genuinely skilled work and it produces a look nothing else does.
It is also divisive, and the division is worth stating: patina is finishing, not construction. A beautifully coloured shoe with an ordinary sole is a beautifully coloured ordinary shoe. Berluti's bespoke is properly made; the ready-to-wear range spans several constructions and should be checked.
As a brand
Since joining LVMH the house has expanded into full menswear (tailoring, leather goods, accessories) under a series of creative directors. The shoemaking remains, but Berluti is now a brand of which shoes are a part, rather than a shoemaker with a shop.
Construction across the range
Bespoke is made in the traditional way and is expensive accordingly. The ready-to-wear covers several constructions and several factories, and the patina, which is what the customer is usually responding to, is applied to all of them.
The honest test for any Berluti shoe is the one this site applies to every brand: ask what construction it is, where it was made, and whether it can be resoled. Colour is not an answer to any of those questions.
Patina as a product
Berluti's contribution was to make the colouring of leather the visible point of the shoe rather than a step in making it. The technique (building translucent layers of dye on a light calf so the finish varies across the surface) is real craft, and the house did more than anyone to establish it as something a customer would pay a premium for.
The bespoke operation and the LVMH-owned retail business are different propositions at very different prices, and the name covers both. As with several houses in this section, the useful question is which one you are actually being offered.
