A. Caraceni

Said kah-rah-CHEH-nee

A. Caraceni is a Milan tailoring house, one of several family firms sharing the Caraceni name, making clean, firmly built jackets among Italy's most expensive.

A. Caraceni in Milan is one of several distinct firms descending from the Caraceni family. It cuts a fully canvassed, cleanly structured coat in the Milanese idiom, and sits at the top of the Italian price range. The relationships between the various Caraceni houses are genuinely disputed.

The name

Several separate businesses in Milan and Rome trade under variations of Caraceni, descending from a family that divided more than once during the twentieth century. They are not branches of one house, they have different cutters, and their reputations are distinct.

The precise sequence of the splits is contested and much of what circulates about it is unsourced. This site records that A. Caraceni operates in Milan and that other Caraceni firms operate separately, and does not assert a family tree it cannot support.

The coat

Fully canvassed, hand-padded, with a defined but not heavy shoulder and a very clean chest. The Milanese position: the handwork is extensive and none of it announces itself.

Prices are at the top of the Italian market and comparable with London and Paris.

What you get for the price

A. Caraceni sits at the top of the Italian market, level with Paris and the upper end of Savile Row, and the price is not explained by materials. It is explained by hours: a fully hand-padded canvas, hand-set sleeves, hand-worked buttonholes, and an internal standard of finishing that is invisible in wear.

Whether that is worth twice a good Neapolitan commission is a judgement about what you value. The Milanese answer is that a coat should be perfect and silent; the Neapolitan answer is that it should be alive. Both are defensible and the price difference between them is real.

The Milanese position

Milanese tailoring is often described as a midpoint between English structure and Neapolitan softness, which is true enough to be useless. The more accurate description is that Milan builds a coat with real internal structure and then hides every trace of the effort: a clean chest with no visible working, a shoulder with a defined line and no emphasis, and proportions that do not draw attention to any single element.

A. Caraceni is the reference point for that approach and among the most expensive tailors in Italy. The difficulty for a buyer is that the result photographs as ordinary. It is a cut you assess in person, on a moving body, or not at all.

Three separate firms carry the Caraceni name and they are not the same business. See also Ferdinando Caraceni and Tommy & Giulio Caraceni.

The shoulder, five ways Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
