Dege & Skinner

Dege & Skinner is a family-owned Savile Row tailor known for military and ceremonial uniforms, and rare in making custom shirts in the same building.

Dege & Skinner is a family-owned Savile Row house with a strong military and ceremonial practice, holding royal warrants. It is unusual in maintaining bespoke shirtmaking in the same building as the tailoring, and in remaining independently owned.

Uniform work

Military tailoring is exacting in a way civilian tailoring is not: the pattern is prescribed, the measurements are unforgiving, and the garment has to work under equipment. Dege & Skinner has kept this practice alive alongside its civilian business, and the technical discipline shows in both.

The house also makes bespoke shirts on the premises, rare on the Row, where shirtmaking is usually subcontracted or sent to Jermyn Street.

The civilian coat

Structured in the English manner with a defined shoulder, a full canvas and a roped sleeve head, cut with the upright bearing that comes from a house whose other business is uniform. The waist is marked and the skirt cut long.

The house remains family-owned, which on Savile Row is now unusual, and cuts on the premises at Number 10.

Shirts on the premises

Bespoke shirtmaking inside a tailoring house is rare and useful: the shirt can be cut to work with the particular coat, the collar height set against the coat's gorge, and the whole outfit fitted together rather than assembled from two separate processes. It is also a discipline that has largely left Savile Row, where shirts are usually subcontracted. Dege & Skinner is among the few houses where the two trades still sit in the same building.

Extended

The shoulder, five ways Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
