Musella Dembech

Musella Dembech is a small father-and-son Milan tailor whose jackets are softer and quirkier than usual, with a high, close-fitting chest and distinctive shoulders.

Musella Dembech is a small Milan bespoke house run by Gianfrancesco Musella Dembech and his son Francesco. Its coat is softer and more idiosyncratic than the Milanese norm, with a high, close chest and a distinctive shoulder.

Not the Milanese default

Milan's reputation is for restraint, and Musella Dembech is the exception that makes the rule visible: a coat with more shape, a higher and closer chest, and proportions that read as personal rather than as regional. It is a small workshop with a correspondingly small output, and much of its clientele is international.

The house shape

A high, close chest with a shoulder that sits narrow and slightly extended, a marked waist and a short skirt. It is a distinctly personal silhouette and it reads as neither Milanese restraint nor Neapolitan softness.

Construction is light, a soft canvas rather than a full English one, which suits the closeness of the cut. The result is a coat that fits like a second layer rather than an outer one.

Working with a small workshop

Two cutters and a limited output means waiting, and it also means the person who measures you makes the decisions about your coat. In a large house the cutter and the customer may not meet after the first fitting; here they will.

The style is personal enough that it should be seen before it is commissioned. A high, close chest and a distinctive shoulder are not neutral choices, and a customer expecting a conventional Milanese coat will not get one.

O ombro, cinco formas Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat.
