Orazio Luciano is a Neapolitan family workshop making soft, hand-finished jackets and suits, and most people discover it through shops in Japan and the United States.

Orazio Luciano is a Neapolitan family workshop making soft, hand-finished jackets and suits. Its international profile came through stockists in Japan and the United States rather than through its own retail, which is a common route for Neapolitan houses of this size.

The stockist route

Several Neapolitan workshops reached an international audience by supplying garments to retailers abroad, particularly in Japan, where specialist shops built businesses on introducing Neapolitan making to a domestic market that took it seriously.

The practical consequence for a buyer is that the same house may be encountered as ready-to-wear in a shop in Tokyo and as bespoke in a workroom in Naples, and the two are different products.

The construction

Light canvas, unpadded shoulder, a sleeve set with visible gathering, patch pockets and a curved breast pocket: the full Neapolitan vocabulary, executed with a great deal of hand finishing. The house is at the softer end even by local standards, and the jackets are noticeably light in the hand.

The trade-off with that much softness is that the coat depends entirely on the cut. There is no canvas to impose a chest, so the garment reflects the wearer's posture precisely, which flatters a good figure and reports faithfully on an indifferent one.

Ready-to-wear and bespoke

The two products differ more than the shared name suggests. The ready-to-wear is made to a house pattern in a size run and finished by hand; the bespoke is cut for the individual. Both are Neapolitan and only one is made for you. This distinction runs through the whole section of the site and is worth internalising: in Naples especially, a familiar name may reach you as three different products at three different prices.

Made internationally legible by Japan

Japanese retail has been the single largest force in the international spread of Neapolitan tailoring since the 1990s, and Orazio Luciano is one of the clearest cases: a family workshop whose reputation outside Italy was largely built by Japanese buyers and Japanese stockists.

The pattern repeats across the city. It explains why the names familiar to English-speaking readers are not the same set as the names familiar in Naples.

The shoulder, five ways Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
