Bespoke tailor · Naples

Sartoria Formosa

Sartoria Formosa is a Naples tailor whose soft, lightly built ready-to-wear jackets became familiar to many American shoppers, and it also makes clothes to order.

Sartoria Formosa is a Naples workshop offering bespoke alongside a ready-to-wear line that has been widely distributed, particularly in the United States. The jacket is soft, lightly built and characteristically Neapolitan.

Two products, one name

Formosa's ready-to-wear reached a large audience through American retailers, which is how most people encounter the name. The bespoke service in Naples is a separate proposition and a different price.

This pattern, a Neapolitan workshop known abroad for its ready-to-wear and at home for its bespoke, is common enough to be worth stating whenever it applies, because the two are not interchangeable evidence of each other.

The two products

Formosa's ready-to-wear is made to house patterns in a size run and hand-finished in Naples; the bespoke is cut individually in the workshop. American buyers overwhelmingly encounter the first, which shapes what the name means outside Italy.

The ready-to-wear jackets are soft, light and generously cut through the chest, with the shoulder line that gives away where they were made. They are among the better-known routes into Neapolitan tailoring for someone not yet ready to commission.

The construction

A natural unpadded shoulder, a light chest canvas, a high armhole and open quarters, with patch pockets and a curved breast pocket. Handwork is extensive on the bespoke and substantial on the ready-to-wear.

Jackets are cut generously through the chest by Neapolitan standards, which makes them more forgiving on a larger frame than some of the neighbouring houses.

Assessment

The house sits in the middle of the Naples field: not the most refined, not the most exaggerated, and consistently well made. For a first Neapolitan jacket that is a reasonable place to be, and the wide distribution means the garments can actually be tried on, which matters more than most buyers expect.

The shoulder, five ways Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
