Richard Anderson

Huntsman-trained cutters who opened their own door on the Row in 2001.

Richard Anderson was founded in 2001 by Richard Anderson and Brian Lishak, both formerly of Huntsman. The house cuts a lean, structured coat with a clean chest, recognisably in the Huntsman lineage, with a slightly lighter touch.

A modern Row house

New houses on Savile Row are almost always founded by cutters leaving established ones, which is how the street has renewed itself for two centuries. Anderson had been Huntsman's head cutter; the shape of the coat reflects it.

The house has been more open than most about its methods, including in print, which makes it easier to document than a great many of its neighbours.

The bespoke process here

Two to four fittings over roughly three to six months for a first commission, with the pattern drafted individually and retained. The house also offers a made-to-measure programme, which is a separate product at a lower price.

Cloth is drawn from the usual English merchants' books, and the house holds its own bunches. Prices sit at the Savile Row level, slightly below the largest houses on the street.

House style

The coat is close to Huntsman's (lean, structured, a clean chest and a marked waist) with slightly less severity and a shoulder built a little lighter. Customers who admire the Huntsman line but find it uncompromising frequently end up here.

The house has also been notably open about its working methods in print, which is unusual on a street where technique is generally treated as proprietary, and it makes the record easier to verify than most.

Huntsman training, without the house rules

Richard Anderson and Brian Lishak both came from Huntsman, and the coat shows it in the structure and the cleanness of the chest. What it does not carry over is the doctrine. The house will cut a softer shoulder or a two-button front if that is what suits the customer, where the parent house has a silhouette it defends. That makes it a useful option for a buyer who wants Huntsman's engineering without Huntsman's severity, and it is a good illustration of how the Row actually propagates: cutters leave, take the method, and drop the orthodoxy.

The shoulder, five ways Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
