Sartoria Solito

Sartoria Solito is a small family tailor in Naples making very traditional jackets by appointment, and it is admired by fellow tailors and experienced customers.

Sartoria Solito is a small Naples bespoke house, run by the Solito family, making an unusually traditional Neapolitan coat. It has a strong following among people who have commissioned widely, and it works largely by appointment.

Traditional in the specific sense

Solito's coat is Neapolitan without the exaggerations that spread through the style in the 2010s: a soft shoulder that is soft rather than deliberately collapsed, proportions that suit the wearer rather than a camera, and finishing done as it has been done for decades. That description sounds like faint praise and is not. A large part of the international Neapolitan trade amplified its own signatures for visibility; the workshops that did not are the ones tailors mention.

Why tailors name it

Ask a Neapolitan tailor whose work he admires and Solito's name recurs. The reasons given are consistent: the balance of the coat, the way the collar sits, and a refusal to move with whatever the international market currently wants a Neapolitan jacket to look like.

In practical terms that means a slightly fuller chest than the fashionable cut, a shoulder that is soft without collapsing, and a length that has not shortened over the last fifteen years.

Working with the house

Small, family-run and largely by appointment. The workshop makes a limited number of garments a year, which means waiting, and the house takes orders abroad on a modest travel schedule rather than a heavy one.

Prices sit at the lower end of the serious Neapolitan range, which reflects the absence of a retail operation rather than any difference in the work.

The tailors' Naples

Solito is named more often by other tailors than by magazines, which is usually a reliable signal. The coat is Neapolitan without being demonstrative about it: the softness is there, the shoulder is quiet, and there is none of the exaggerated shirt-sleeve pleating that has become shorthand for the city.

It sits at the conservative end of Neapolitan tailoring, and for a first Neapolitan commission that is usually the right end to start from.

The shoulder, five ways Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
