Bespoke tailor · London

Steven Hitchcock

The drape cut, carried on outside Anderson & Sheppard by a tailor who grew up in it.

Steven Hitchcock is a London bespoke tailor working in the drape tradition, having trained at Anderson & Sheppard where his father was head coatmaker. He cuts a soft English coat with the characteristic fullness through the chest, in a small independent workshop.

A lineage rather than a firm

The drape cut is a method, and it has been carried out of Anderson & Sheppard by tailors who learned it there. Hitchcock is the clearest example: a small operation, cutting the same soft, full-chested coat, at a price below the large Row houses because the overheads are different.

For a customer this is the most interesting corner of the London trade: the same technical tradition, without a Mayfair shopfront in the price.

The drape, made lightly

Fullness across the chest and blades in the Scholte manner, with a soft natural shoulder and a high armhole so the extra cloth does not restrict. The coat hangs rather than grips and moves with the wearer.

Construction is a full canvas, hand-padded, in the London way. What is absent relative to the large Row houses is the overhead rather than the method.

The economics

The interesting thing about a small independent working in an established tradition is what leaves the price. There is no shopfront in Mayfair, no showroom, and a much smaller overhead, and the difference goes to the customer rather than to the rent.

What does not change is the method: the same drape cut, the same canvassed construction, the same number of fittings. For a customer who wants A&S's silhouette and does not need A&S's front door, this is the obvious comparison to make.

Extended

The shoulder, five ways Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
