Bespoke tailor · London

Thom Sweeney

A younger London house cutting a softer, more Italian-inflected English coat.

Thom Sweeney was founded by Thom Whiddett and Luke Sweeney, both trained on Savile Row, and cuts a softer, closer coat than the traditional Row silhouette: English construction with a lighter, more contemporary line. It runs bespoke alongside a substantial ready-to-wear business.

Between two traditions

The house takes English cutting and construction and softens it: less shoulder, a closer body, a shorter coat. That has been the general direction of travel in London since the 2000s, and Thom Sweeney is among the clearest expressions of it.

The ready-to-wear business is a large part of what the name means to most customers, and it is a separate product from the bespoke.

The house cut

A soft but defined shoulder, a canvassed chest, a close body and a shorter coat than the traditional Row length. It reads as contemporary English rather than as either Savile Row or Italian, which is the position the house set out to occupy.

Bespoke is cut in London; the ready-to-wear is made abroad to the house's specification and is a separate product at a considerably lower price.

The two businesses

The bespoke operation and the ready-to-wear line share a name and an aesthetic and are otherwise different products. The ready-to-wear is well made and made abroad; the bespoke is cut in London to an individual pattern.

The house's positioning (English construction, Italian softness, contemporary proportions) is where a large part of the London market has moved since the 2000s, and it is worth understanding as a direction of travel rather than as one firm's idea.

The English coat, warmed up

Thom Whiddett and Luke Sweeney both trained under Timothy Everest, and their coat is the clearest current example of a London house absorbing Italian softness without becoming Italian. The shoulder is lighter than the Row's norm and the chest less built, but the balance, the waist suppression and the skirt are English.

It is a genuinely modern position rather than a compromise, and it has been widely copied. The risk in the category (not specific to this house) is that softening the construction while keeping English proportions can produce a coat with neither the English coat's shape nor the Neapolitan coat's ease. Judged on the finished garment, this house stays on the right side of that line.

The shoulder, five ways Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
