Tommy & Giulio Caraceni

Tommy & Giulio Caraceni is the separate Rome business carrying the Caraceni name, making long, close-fitting jackets with only light padding and stiffening.

Tommy & Giulio Caraceni is the Rome house within the Caraceni constellation, cutting in the Roman idiom: long, close through the body, lightly structured. As with the Milan firms, it is a separate business from the others sharing the name.

Roman proportion

The Roman line (long skirt, marked waist, close hip) is a matter of proportion rather than of construction, and it is what distinguishes this house's work from its Milanese namesakes as much as any difference in canvas or shoulder.

Rome's tailoring has always had a strong formal and ceremonial component, and the house's work reflects a clientele that still requires it.

The Roman line, described

A long coat with a marked waist and a close hip, cut to elongate. The shoulder is built but not heavy and the chest is clean. Against a Milanese coat it is longer and leaner; against a Neapolitan one it is considerably more structured.

Rome's formal practice shapes the house's work: morning coats, tailcoats and dinner jackets are ordinary commissions here rather than occasional ones, and the proportions of formal dress are second nature.

Formal work

Rome sustains more formal and ceremonial tailoring than any other Italian city, and the house's practice reflects it: morning dress, evening dress and the specific conventions that go with them are ordinary work here rather than an occasional commission.

For a customer that matters practically. A house that makes tailcoats regularly knows the proportions; one that makes one a year is learning on your garment.

Rome's version

The Roman coat is longer and leaner than the Milanese one, cut with a lower button stance and a quieter shoulder, and it is designed to be worn by a man who wants to look tall and does not want to look tailored. It is the least demonstrative of the major Italian schools and the least written about, largely for the same reason.

Die Schulter, fünf Varianten Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagramm erstellt für Il Sartoriale.
