Bespoke tailor · London

Whitcomb & Shaftesbury

A London house that says out loud what several others do quietly: some of the making happens in India.

Whitcomb & Shaftesbury cuts in London and offers two tiers: a fully London-made bespoke, and a 'classic bespoke' cut in London and made in the house's own workshop in India at a substantially lower price. The disclosure is the notable part: the same arrangement exists elsewhere unstated.

Two tiers, stated

The pattern is drafted and the cloth cut in London in both cases; what differs is where the coat is made. The house's Indian workshop was set up and trained by the firm, and the price difference is considerable.

Whether a garment made abroad from a London-cut pattern is 'Savile Row bespoke' is a definitional argument the trade has had for years. What is not arguable is that stating the arrangement plainly is better practice than not stating it, and several houses do not.

The house cut

English construction (a full canvas, a hand-padded chest, a defined shoulder) cut with a slightly softer line than the traditional Row silhouette. The pattern is drafted individually and retained in London regardless of tier.

The house makes across the range including formal wear, and offers a made-to-measure programme alongside the two bespoke tiers.

The argument about where a coat is made

The trade's objection to offshore making is that fittings, corrections and the cutter's judgement are the product, and that a coat made thousands of miles from the cutter loses the tight loop between fitting and correction. That objection has force.

The counter-argument is that the pattern, the cutting and the fittings all happen in London, that the workshop was established and trained by the firm, and that the alternative for most of these customers is not a London-made coat but no bespoke at all.

This site's position is narrow and firm: both arrangements are legitimate and the customer is entitled to know which one he is buying. A house that says so plainly is doing the right thing.

Saying the quiet part

Whitcomb & Shaftesbury cuts in London and has the making done in India, and it says so openly, in print, at a stated price. Several other London names have some portion of their work made off the premises and are considerably less forthcoming about it.

The interesting question is not whether offshore making is legitimate (it plainly can be, if the cutting and the fittings are done by the person whose name is on the door) but whether the customer is told. A house that discloses its arrangement can be judged on it. A house that does not cannot be judged at all, which is the actual problem.

This site treats disclosure as a quality signal in its own right, independent of where the work is done. See how these assessments are made.

The shoulder, five ways Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
