Gianni Agnelli

The Fiat chairman whose deliberate small errors became a whole aesthetic.

Agnelli, head of Fiat and the most photographed businessman in Italy, dressed with a studied irregularity: a watch worn over the shirt cuff, boots under a suit, a tie knotted slightly askew, button-down collars left unbuttoned. The style is genuinely his and has been widely imitated, usually badly.

What the style actually was

Excellent tailoring, largely Caraceni, worn with one or two deliberate departures from convention. The watch over the cuff is the famous one. Hiking boots with a business suit is another. A shirt collar with the buttons undone, a tie pulled slightly loose. The point was not carelessness. Everything underneath was correct, expensive and precisely fitted, and the departures worked because of that. Copied without the foundation, they read as sloppiness, which is what most imitation of Agnelli produces.

Why it is worth recording

Because it is the clearest case in menswear of style as a set of decisions rather than a set of garments. There is no Agnelli item to buy. What is imitable is the principle, that a rule broken deliberately by someone who observes the rest reads as confidence, and that principle is genuinely useful.

It also has a limit that is worth stating: it requires the rest to be right.

What is worth copying and what is not

The specific habits do not transfer. A watch worn over a shirt cuff on someone whose suit does not fit reads as an error rather than a decision, and a boot under a business suit needs a great deal of authority elsewhere to work.

What does transfer is the underlying structure: get everything right, then break one thing deliberately. It is a useful principle and it is almost always applied in the wrong order: the departure adopted first and the foundation never built.
