Chittleborough & Morgan
The other inheritors of Nutters, cutting a coat with more shape than almost anyone.
Chittleborough & Morgan was founded by Roy Chittleborough and Joe Morgan, both of whom worked at Nutters of Savile Row. The house cuts a strongly shaped coat with a distinctive lapel and a great deal of hand finishing, and it works in small numbers.
The Nutters inheritance
Two houses on Savile Row descend from Nutters, Edward Sexton's and this one, and they went in different directions from the same starting point. Chittleborough & Morgan's coat is heavily shaped, with a pronounced waist and a lapel that is unmistakable once seen.
The workshop is small and the output correspondingly limited.
Working with the house
A small workshop with a limited output, cutting on the premises, and a waiting list that reflects both. Fittings are conducted by the cutter and the number required depends on the figure and the garment.
The house makes across the range (suits, jackets, evening wear, overcoats) and the silhouette carries through all of them, which is worth knowing before commissioning an overcoat expecting something neutral.
The detail people notice
The lapel is the signature: cut long, with a strong belly and a peak that rises further than convention allows, over a chest shaped to an unusual degree. Once seen it is difficult to mistake for anything else.
The workshop is small and the waiting list reflects it. This is a house for a customer who wants a particular coat rather than a Savile Row coat, and who is prepared to wait for it.
The other half of Nutters
Roy Chittleborough and Joe Morgan both came out of the same workroom as Edward Sexton, and the two houses are the two surviving readings of that silhouette. Chittleborough & Morgan cuts with more shape through the body and a more pronounced skirt, and takes the tailoring further toward the sculptural: more seams, more suppression, more visible intent.
For a buyer choosing between them, the distinction is not quality but temperament: one house is emphatic about the shoulder, the other about the waist and the flare. Both are a long way from the Row's centre ground and neither is trying to return to it.
