Edward Sexton

Edward Sexton is the house of the tailor who shook up Savile Row in 1969, still making bold jackets with huge lapels, strong shoulders, nipped waists.

Edward Sexton, with Tommy Nutter, opened Nutters of Savile Row in 1969 and changed what a Row coat could look like: enormous lapels, a strongly built shoulder, a sharply suppressed waist and flared skirt. The house that carries his name continues that silhouette, which remains the most flamboyant on the street.

Nutters

Nutters of Savile Row opened in 1969 with Tommy Nutter as the front and Edward Sexton as the cutter, and it did something the Row had not done: it put a window display in, dressed rock stars, and cut a coat with an unmistakably contemporary silhouette while keeping the traditional construction underneath.

The shape (a very wide, sharply peaked lapel, a high roped shoulder, a nipped waist and a flared skirt) is still the most identifiable house style in London.

Continuity

Sexton continued to cut under his own name for decades, and the house has kept the silhouette after his death. It is a genuinely divisive style: theatrical, unforgiving of a poor figure, and entirely deliberate. Customers who want it want nothing else.

Living with the silhouette

This is the most assertive cut on the street and it should be chosen deliberately. A wide peak lapel and a sharply suppressed waist do not recede into a room, and the coat will be the first thing anyone notices.

It also demands a figure that can carry it. The shape imposes rather than accommodates, which is the opposite of the drape argument next door at Anderson & Sheppard, and a customer should look at both before deciding which conversation he wants to be having with his clothes for the next twenty years.

Die Schulter, fünf Varianten Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagramm erstellt für Il Sartoriale.
