Sartoria Dalcuore

Said dal-KWOR-eh

Sartoria Dalcuore is a small Naples tailor known for soft, well-proportioned jackets and fine handwork, and other tailors rate it more highly than its modest fame suggests.

Sartoria Dalcuore is a Naples bespoke house founded by Luigi Dalcuore, known for a soft, elegantly proportioned coat and for the quality of its hand finishing. It is smaller and less publicised than the largest Neapolitan names, and better regarded within the trade than its profile suggests.

Position

Dalcuore belongs to the group of Neapolitan workshops that make in genuinely small numbers and take a large part of their orders on the road. The coat is recognisably Neapolitan (soft shoulder, light chest, high armhole) with proportions on the more restrained side.

The house's reputation rests on execution rather than signature: the details are conventional for Naples and the finishing is unusually careful.

What the coat is like

The house works in the mainstream of Neapolitan practice rather than at one of its edges. The shoulder is natural and lightly gathered rather than dramatically so; the chest carries a light canvas rather than none; the quarters open, but not to the extent that the coat looks cut away. Proportions are conservative: a lapel that suits the wearer rather than the season, and a length that covers the seat. That restraint is the reason the house is better regarded inside the trade than outside it. A coat with no exaggerated feature gives a photograph nothing to catch, and gives a wearer nothing to explain.

Commissioning here

Two to three fittings is normal for a first commission, over roughly three to six months. Much of the work is taken on the road, so a customer in New York or London should expect the calendar to run at the pace of the visits rather than the workshop.

As with every small Neapolitan house, ask who will make the garment. Outworking is traditional and not a defect, but it is the variable that determines consistency, and a house that answers the question directly is telling you something useful.

Why the name travels less

A workshop's international reputation tracks its retail partnerships and its willingness to travel far more closely than it tracks the quality of its work. Dalcuore is well regarded within the trade and comparatively quiet outside it, which tells a reader about distribution rather than about tailoring. This is worth generalising: a Naples workshop that has never appeared in English-language coverage is not thereby a lesser workshop. It may simply never have had a Japanese or American retailer decide to carry it.

The shoulder, five ways Right shoulder, front-on; the dashed line is the wearer’s own. Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan signature. The roped shoulder is Roman and Parisian in origin, and Cifonelli’s is the best known. The extended shoulder belongs to the sharper end of Savile Row and to the Nutters silhouette. The shoulder is where a house’s cut is most visible and hardest to fake, because it is built inside the coat. Diagram drawn for Il Sartoriale.
